NEW YORK: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at a meeting with Chief Adviser to the interim government of Bangladesh Professor Muhammad Yunus said the two nations need to boost their relations.
Mr Sharif and Prof Yunus, a Nobel peace prize laureate, met on the sidelines of the 79th session of UN General Assembly in New York.
The meeting came at a time when the government of Sheikh Hasina Wajid was topped in a students’ movement after about two decades. Hasina Wajid was always considered a stooge of India and always cold-shouldered efforts to boost relations with Pakistan.
After fleeing her country, she has been living at an unknown place in India while the interim government in Dhakka has stated that she must return and face the cases registered against her and her party leaders.
The prime minister of Pakistan urged the head of the Bangladeshi interim government to work for engancing relations between the two countries.
He was of the opinion that bilateral relations could be boosted through parliamentary exchanges, people-to-people contacts, and interactions among sportspersons, academics, artists, students, etc.
The prime minister shed light on Pakistan’s strong relations with Bangladesh that were based on common faith, history, and culture. He said both the nations needed to work together to further strengthen the bilateral relations.
Capitalizing on the immense goodwill and warmth among the people of the two countries, he encouraged fostering relations through parliamentary exchanges, people-to-people contacts, and interactions among sportspersons, academics, artists, students, etc.
In addition, he extended an invitation to the Prof Yunus to undertake an official visit to Pakistan.
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister Office, both the sides agreed that there was a need to work closely at bilateral, regional, and multilateral levels for the progress and development of the peoples of both countries.
