MADRID: Spain has declared its first-ever national emergency after fast-moving wildfires engulfed multiple areas around Madrid and the neighboring province of Ávila, forcing thousands to flee their homes.
Authorities said extreme heat, prolonged dry weather, and strong winds have fueled several simultaneous wildfires. The rapidly worsening conditions prompted the government to activate a nationwide emergency response for the first time.
More than 10,000 people have evacuated to safer locations, according to official figures. Hundreds of firefighters, Spain’s Military Emergency Unit (UME), and emergency teams continue battling the flames to contain the disaster.
Government Takes Direct Control of Emergency Response
Following the declaration, Spain’s Interior Ministry assumed direct control of all firefighting and rescue operations. Officials said the unprecedented move reflects the scale and severity of the wildfire crisis.
Authorities urged residents in affected areas to avoid unnecessary travel, follow official safety instructions, and take precautions against heavy smoke. Emergency crews remain on high alert as weather conditions continue to hamper containment efforts.
Climate Change Intensifies Wildfire Risk
Experts said rising temperatures, prolonged drought, and climate change have significantly increased wildfire risks across Spain and southern Europe. They warned that the region now faces longer and more destructive fire seasons each year.
Meanwhile, neighboring France is also battling major wildfires in its southwest. Thousands of residents near Bordeaux have evacuated, while hundreds of firefighters are working to stop the fires from spreading further.
