UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has called for stronger, impartial international action to combat conflict-related sexual violence, urging the UN Security Council to ensure accountability in all armed conflicts and situations of foreign occupation.
Addressing an open debate of the Security Council, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, said sexual violence is not an inevitable consequence of war but is often used as a weapon of terror, coercion and collective punishment.
He said such crimes devastate the lives of survivors, tear families apart and leave lasting scars on societies, stressing the need for equal accountability in every conflict on the Council’s agenda.
The Pakistani envoy also underscored the importance of providing survivors with comprehensive medical, psychological, legal and economic support, saying restoring justice and dignity is a shared responsibility of the international community.
Pakistan further called for strengthening protection mechanisms for women and ensuring full compliance with international humanitarian law.
