Trump Also Warns of Additional Tariffs on China Over Russian Oil Imports

WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a warning that China may face additional tariffs if it continues to purchase oil from Russia.

Speaking to reporters, President Trump emphasized that countries trading with Russia, particularly in the energy sector, could face economic consequences. “We’ve already imposed a 50% tariff on India, and we may soon announce similar measures against China,” he said.

Trump noted that China’s ongoing oil imports from Russia effectively support Russia’s war efforts in Ukraine by fueling its military operations. As such, he indicated that tougher trade restrictions are on the table.

When asked about tariffs on Russia itself, Trump said those decisions would be made at a later time. However, he confirmed that negotiations with Russian officials are progressing, and a high-level meeting is expected soon. “It’s a good opportunity. We’ve made meaningful progress, and I look forward to meeting with them shortly,” he added.

The president also revealed plans to impose nearly 100% tariffs on imports of microchips and semiconductors, a move that could have broad implications for global tech and manufacturing industries.

In a separate warning, Trump stated that if Iran restarts its nuclear program, the U.S. would respond with military action.

On Wednesday, the White House announced a 25% increase in tariffs on Indian imports, bringing the total to 50%. According to the statement, this step was “necessary and appropriate” in response to India’s direct and indirect purchases of Russian oil.

Trump reiterated that India has not been a fair trading partner and that its continued energy ties with Moscow undermine international efforts to isolate Russia economically.

Meanwhile, U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. According to the Kremlin, the talks were described as “constructive and beneficial.”
