WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a new limit on immigration visas for the fiscal year 2026.
Only 7,500 immigrants will be eligible for visas next year. This is the lowest number set since the Refugee Act of 1980.
Trump said the move is meant to reduce the overall number of immigrants entering the U.S. and ensure that immigration does not harm the country’s interests. He specifically mentioned that white South Africans face a risk of genocide, and the new plan prioritizes them for visas.
Under the new rules, immigrants will undergo strict security checks, and approval from both the U.S. State Department and Homeland Security will be required. This follows an earlier executive order Trump issued in June regarding foreign entry.
Human rights groups have strongly criticized the new policy, saying it will further restrict U.S. immigration and could be discriminatory. Experts warn that this move may significantly limit opportunities for refugees and immigrants worldwide.
