Trump wants to abolish birthright citizenship

WASHINGTON: President-elect Donald Trump has repeated his intention to abolish the birthright citizenship in the United States of America.

According to the US media, Trump has expressed his plan to do away with the law under which children of outsiders born in the US get American citizenship. Trump had in the past criticized the law and said it must be abolished.

In an interview with NBC, the president-elect said that he was absolutely planning to end birthright citizenship on Day One of his presidency.

“We have to end it,” Trump told host Kristen Welker. In a video post a year ago, Trump had said he’d sign an executive action to do so on the first day in office.

However, legal experts are of the view that the birthright citizenship is protected by the constitution of the United States and Trump may not be able to change it.

Many have criticized Trump for his plan and said it showed his biased attitude towards immigrants. They said birthright citizenship was followed not only in the US but also in European countries.

They said that the US needed stringent measures to check arrival in the country of illegal migrants.
