LONDON: Foreign Secretary David Lammy delivered a strong condemnation of Israel’s actions in Gaza, particularly its latest military offensive. He criticized Prime Minister Netanyahu’s decision to restrict aid, warning that Gaza teeters on the edge of famine.

Lammy cited UN reports showing catastrophic humanitarian conditions and accused Israel of worsening civilian suffering. The UK urged Israel to lift the blockade and allow unhindered access to humanitarian relief.

Trade Talks Suspended, Sanctions Imposed

In response, the UK has suspended ongoing trade negotiations with Israel. Lammy also announced targeted sanctions on individuals and groups linked to violence against Palestinians in the West Bank.

The sanctions include travel bans and asset freezes, focused primarily on extremist settler organizations and leaders promoting illegal displacement. This marks a significant escalation in the UK’s foreign policy stance.

Global Pressure Builds on Israel

Lammy warned Israel that its current course risks deepening its international isolation. He denounced extreme rhetoric from some Israeli officials calling for the forced relocation of Palestinians.

The UK’s actions align with growing global concern, with France, Canada, and the EU also reevaluating their diplomatic and economic ties with Israel amid the worsening crisis.

Call for Ceasefire and Diplomatic Resolution

Lammy reiterated support for an immediate ceasefire and called on Hamas to release hostages. He praised mediation efforts by the U.S., Qatar, and Egypt aimed at ending the war.

The UK reaffirmed its commitment to international law and the two-state solution, emphasizing that peace and justice must remain the long-term goal.
