NEW YORK (REUTERS): The United Nations General Assembly annual session begins at its headquarters in New York with the member states geared up to discuss current world conflicts including the Gaza war.
World leaders will address the session and highlight the UN role in tackling international issues, especially the Gaza war. Side events at UNGA will focus on different issues including international efforts to help Haiti fight gang violence.
A two-day Summit of the Future had opened the meetings in New York. The event, which ran Sunday to Monday, addressed how to improve international cooperation amid mounting conflict and worsening threats like climate change.
It also attempted to tackle criticisms that the U.N.’s structures – many of which are decades old – are outdated and do not reflect today’s economic and political realities.
“We are here to bring multilateralism back from the brink,” U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres told the summit on Sunday.
U.N. member states agreed a pact during the summit, setting out an international consensus on themes including peace and security, global governance, sustainable development, gender and youth. It laid out some 56 broad actions that countries pledged to achieve.
The agreement came after some nine months of negotiations. Not all countries were satisfied with the outcome.
Russia failed in its bid to include an amendment – backed by others including North Korea and Iran – that would have said the U.N. “shall not intervene in matters which are essentially within the domestic jurisdiction of any state”.
