ISLAMABAD: The United Nations Security Council has expressed serious concerns over India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty and called on both Pakistan and India to avoid military confrontation and pursue diplomatic channels to resolve escalating tensions, the Foreign Office said here on Tuesday.
According to a statement from the Foreign Office spokesperson, a closed-door meeting of the Security Council was held at Pakistan’s request to discuss the deteriorating security situation in the region and India’s recent provocative actions.
The spokesperson said that several council members voiced deep alarm over rising tensions and emphasized the urgent need to prevent military escalation. Many members identified the Kashmir dispute as the core issue behind regional instability and stressed that it must be resolved in line with UN resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
During the meeting, Pakistan’s representative briefed the council on India’s unilateral actions on April 23, warning that such provocations could have serious consequences. Intelligence reports have also indicated the possibility of a planned Indian military operation, further raising concerns about regional peace and security.
The Pakistani envoy highlighted instances of state-sponsored terrorism and targeted killings by India, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
Pakistan rejected India’s allegations regarding the recent Pahalgam attack, condemning New Delhi for making baseless accusations without investigation or evidence. The Foreign Office maintained that such claims are part of India’s efforts to discredit the legitimate Kashmiri struggle.
Terming the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty as a dangerous maneuver, the spokesperson said any move to block or divert river flows would be tantamount to an act of war. The Security Council members also echoed concerns about India’s decision to suspend the treaty.
Pakistan reiterated its full preparedness to defend its sovereignty and stated that it reserves the right to self-defense under the UN Charter. The country also called on the international community to demonstrate responsibility and support mediation efforts led by the UN Secretary-General and the Security Council.
