WASHINGTON/TEHRAN: The United States has carried out airstrikes against targets in Iran in response to an alleged drone attack on a commercial vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said.
According to CENTCOM, Iran launched a drone attack on a commercial ship on June 25. In retaliation, US aircraft struck Iranian missile and drone storage facilities as well as coastal radar sites.
The command said US forces would continue to ensure the safe passage of commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and remain vigilant to enforce the terms of the existing agreement with Iran.
Iranian media reported that a projectile landed in the southern coastal city of Sirik but did not immediately provide further details on casualties or damage.
Before the strikes, US President Donald Trump had declined to comment on a possible response, telling reporters, “You’ll find out.”
