US president offers mediation to resolve Kashmir issue

Says I have stopped a nuclear war through trade pressure, nobody else could have done it.

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has once again offered to mediate between India and Pakistan on the long-standing Kashmir dispute, claiming credit for helping to avert a potential war between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.

Speaking to the media at the White House, President Trump reiterated his desire to see peace in South Asia. He said, “I have stopped a nuclear war through trade pressure, nobody else could have done it.”

Trump explained, “I told both India and Pakistan that the hostility over Kashmir has gone on for far too long. I can help solve everything. I will be the mediator.”

He further claimed that he persuaded both countries to avoid conflict by tying trade talks to peace efforts. “I told them, no trade unless the war stops. They understood, and now we’re talking about trade deals,” Trump said, describing leaders from both countries as great people and praising their cooperation.

Previously, US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce had expressed optimism that Trump might resolve the Kashmir issue during his presidency. She said, “President Trump is the only leader who has brought people to the table who others thought would never even sit together.”

It is worth noting that Trump has mentioned his mediation offer and efforts to prevent war between India and Pakistan over a dozen times. Each time, it has sparked strong reactions from the Modi government, while the Indian opposition Congress party has used it to criticize the Indian Prime Minister.

Earlier, on May 10, Trump had posted on his social media platform Truth Social, announcing that India and Pakistan had agreed to a ceasefire.
