ISLAMABAD: The United States has announced the restoration of routine consular services at its consulates in Karachi and Lahore, including visa processing and assistance for US citizens, months after operations were suspended over security concerns.
Consular services had been halted in March following violent protests in Pakistan triggered by the US and Israeli strikes on Iran in February. During the unrest, protesters attempted to breach the outer security perimeter of the US Consulate in Karachi, leading to clashes with security forces and prompting the suspension of services.
In a video message posted on X, the US Embassy said the two consulates would resume normal operations. It advised visa applicants to avoid agents or middlemen and instead use official channels for appointments and applications. However, no specific date was announced for the full restoration of services.
Earlier this year, the US State Department also announced the permanent closure of its consulate in Peshawar, with its services shifted to the US Embassy in Islamabad and other consulates.
Washington said the decision was taken to ensure the safety of diplomatic staff and improve the efficient use of resources.
