US Resumes Strikes on Iran as Fragile Truce Collapses

WASHINGTON/TEHRAN: The United States launched a fresh wave of military strikes against Iran, resuming hostilities despite a preliminary peace agreement reached last month and ongoing diplomatic talks.

According to US officials, the strikes were carried out in response to Iranian attacks on three commercial vessels transiting the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

Iran’s military said it retaliated by launching missiles and drones at US military bases in Bahrain and Kuwait on Wednesday.

The latest exchange marks the most intense fighting since late last month and raises fresh concerns over the collapse of the fragile ceasefire.

The escalation comes as US President Donald Trump meets NATO leaders in Turkey, with regional security expected to dominate discussions.

The Strait of Hormuz, through which nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes, remains a critical flashpoint. Shipping companies have been placed on high alert as fears grow that the renewed conflict could disrupt global energy supplies and international trade.

World leaders have urged both Washington and Tehran to exercise restraint and return to negotiations. The renewed violence has heightened concerns about a broader regional conflict, with diplomats warning that further escalation could undermine ongoing efforts to restore stability in the Middle East.
