Visa condition imposed for entry of Afghan truckers

PESHAWAR: The condition of visa has been imposed on drivers of trucks carrying goods from Aghanistan to cross border into Pakistan.

Officials said that with effect from August 1, 2024, no truck driver from Afghanistan would be allowed entry without having a valid visa for Pakistan.

They said that on the request of the Afghan authorities, the visa condition for the transporters had been relaxed from January 1 this year to July 31.

The process to issue visas to the drivers has been started, they said. In the past, transporters entered Pakistan and Afghanistan on the identify cards of their respective countries.

A protest was held at Afghan border in Chaman by transporters against the imposition of the restriction. The Dharna continued for many months and ended last week.

The authorities say that the visa condition had been made mandatory in order to check illegal entry and smuggling across the Pak-Afghan border.
