3 people killed in terrorist attack in Vienna
VIENNA: According to the British news agency Reuters, one of the two armed attackers was shot dead by the police while one escaped and the search is on. The Austrian Interior Minister accused that one of the attackers was a supporter of ISIS. The aim was to weaken and divide Austrian democracy.
According to AFP, Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Chris called the attack “hate terrorism.” According to police, “several armed suspects fired rifles” at six locations, including near a synagogue and in the center of the town. The part is also included.
However, one passerby was killed and another died of his injuries, police said, adding that 15 people were taken to hospital, seven of them critically injured, and one policeman was injured in the attack.
The attack came just hours after the Corona virus was about to lock down again in Austria and people were enjoying the last moments of freedom in restaurants and other entertainment venues.
The Austrian chancellor said the attackers were armed with state-of-the-art automatic weapons and were professionally prepared. After the attack, police sealed off Vienna’s historic sites and urged people to stay indoors. They took refuge in houses and hotels and suspended public transport in the old part of the city.
Surveillance has been tightened at the border checkpoints in search of the attacker and the Home Minister has announced a holiday for the children from school, though the public has been instructed to stay indoors, the city mayor said.
