ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced that the long-awaited 5G spectrum auction will be held on March 10, 2026.
PTA Chairman Hafeez-ur-Rehman said that improved internet connectivity is essential for achieving the vision of a “Digital Pakistan.” He noted that the launch of 5G services following the auction would help address existing internet performance issues across the country.
He added that 5G-enabled smartphones are already available in the market for around Rs40,000, and mobile companies are planning to introduce installment plans to make devices more affordable for consumers.
Director General Licensing Aamir Shahzad stated that 101 countries worldwide have already launched 5G services. He revealed that the government has made 597 megahertz of spectrum available for the auction. Demand for additional spectrum has increased significantly since the COVID-19 pandemic, he added.
Currently, about 97 percent of mobile towers in Pakistan are operating on 4G technology. However, connectivity challenges persist in rural areas, largely due to electricity load-shedding. Officials believe that the introduction of new spectrum will improve overall quality of service and enhance internet speeds nationwide..
