ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Monday took up a petition filed by an army officer but the petitioner was nowhere to be traced with the apex court judges looking for him desperately.
The petition was filed by retired Brigadier Ali Khan seeking a probe into the rigging in the February 8 general elections and declaring the polls as null and void and beholding of the polls.
When a three-member bench of the court took up the petition, the petitioner was not present. On quiry, the judges were told that the petition had been withdrawn. It was strange that the court took up for hearing a petition that was withdrawn.
But the chief justice insisted that the petitioner should be produced before the court yo make it sure that he had taken back the petition. He ordered the attorney general to contact the petitioner on phone or send police to his residence and bring him to the court.
It may be mentioned here that thousands of cases are pending in the apex court as well as in the lower judiciary and the backlog is increasing. Hundreds of cases go without being taken up by courts even for once.
But some cases are heard on priority even at midnight. Moreover, cases are also delayed by rival parties delaying dispensation of justice.
