PM Shehbaz orders steps to modernize shipping sector

KARACHI: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during his visit to Karachi on Sunday also reviewed the working of the shipping sector and directed the quarters concerned to modernize the ports to meet the emerging needs.

He issued the direction while chairing a meeting held to discuss the working of the Karachi Port Trust, Port Qasim Authority and Pakistan National Shipping Corporation. The prime minister said that Malir Expressway should be connected with the seaport to ensure swift delivery of goods.

It was also decided that fees for LNG ships at Port Qasim would be brought down at par with the existing rates at the international level.

Moreover, installation of modern and sophisticated scanning machinery should be ensured at the earliest in the seaports, the prime minister said, ordering steps for the capacity building of ports.

After being briefed by the officials concerned, Mr Sharif stressed the importance of decreasing the customs clearance time at the ports. He also sought an action plan for the regulation of shipping lines.
