ISLAMABAD: Government has decided to import 30.8 million metric tons wheat on duty free price as precautionary measures for the supply of cheap flour across the country, including Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
According to the document, the government has decided to import additional wheat to meet the requirements of the country. However, additional wheat will be imported on duty free through the Trading Corporation of Pakistan.
According to the document, 80,000 metric tonnes of wheat will be provided to Azad Kashmir government, while, 300,000 metric tonnes of wheat will be provided to Utility Stores Corporation. According to the document, demand for subsidized flour has increased due to surge in open market prices in Azad Kashmir. The corporation has demanded an additional 300,000 metric tonnes of wheat to supply cheap flour.
Ministry of Commerce has opposed the move to import wheat as the document says that the decision should be taken on the basis of arrival and demand of local wheat, rather wheat should not be imported on the occasion of arrival of local crop.
According to the Ministry of Commerce, wheat imports will lead to imbalance of support price in the country. According to the document, the Azad Kashmir government has received 236,592 MT of wheat from its quota and the Utility Stores Corporation has received 197,344 MT of wheat from its quota.
