LONDON: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that the United Kingdom will not participate in the ongoing war against Iran.
However, he said that the UK is working with allied countries to restore maritime traffic and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil shipping route in the Middle East.
Addressing a press conference, Starmer said that reopening the Strait is not an easy task but is essential for global trade and energy stability. He added that coordinated actions with allies are underway and negotiations are ongoing to ensure a practical and reliable plan.
Starmer clarified that the Strait of Hormuz issue will not become a NATO mission and stressed that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East should end immediately due to rising petroleum prices and the global economic impact.
He mentioned that 92,000 British citizens have returned from the Middle East so far, and the government continues to monitor the situation closely.
Starmer also highlighted that post-conflict, negotiations with Iran will be necessary and assured that the UK will work towards the fastest resolution. He noted that relations with US President Donald Trump remain very good.
