NEW DELHI: Tensions in the northeastern Indian state of Manipur have erupted into violent ethnic clashes, triggered by the Modi government’s policies that inflame social and communal divisions.

According to reports, the unrest intensified after a blast in Bishnupur claimed the lives of two children and injured a woman. The Manipur government subsequently suspended mobile internet in five districts, a move that fueled further protests.

Protesters attacked a police camp, and responding officers fired upon the crowd, leaving at least 19 people seriously injured. Local sources reported that the army attempted to seize two fuel tankers from civilians, which were set ablaze by protesters in retaliation.

Local residents have condemned the government, saying the army’s actions endanger civilian lives while pursuing political objectives. They warned that the escalating violence could further destabilize the region and worsen ethnic tensions.
