FO terms US lawmakers’ letter against diplomatic norms

Statement comes after about 60 members of House of Commons write a letter to President Joe Biden to ensure PTI founder Imran Khan's release.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Thursday reacted to a letter by US House of Commons members to President Joe Biden seeking his role to get Imran Khan released from imprisonment.

At least 60 members of the House of Commons have written a letter to President Joe Biden asking him to play his role in releasing the former prime minister and PTI founder from jail. The letter also asked the US president to get political prisoners in Pakistan freed.

In a media briefing in Islamabad, Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said that the letters by the US lawmakers was against diplomatic norms. She said such a step aimed at influencing the judicial process in a country was also against the independence of a country.

The Foreign Office spokesperson said that the judiciary in Pakistan is independent and all decisions were taken in accordance with the law.

In reply to a question, the spokesperson said that Pakistan was not invited to the BRICS summit, adding Islamabad had applied for the membership of the bloc.
