Govt turns down PTI demand for formation of judicial commission

Says a judicial commission is formed on any issue that is not under adjudication in any court.

ISLAMABAD: The government has turned down one of the main demands of the opposition PTI for the formation of a judicial commission into the May 9 and the November 26 incidents.

On May 9, 2023, PTI supporters attacked military installations after party founder and former prime minister Imran Khan was arrested in a corruption case. Over these arson attacks, cases have been registered and many PTI supporters have been sentenced by military courts.

On November 26, 2024, PTI held a protest and after reaching D Chowk in Islamabad, an operation was conducted in which the party claims its workers were killed.

In respond to PTI’s demands, the government committee will submit its written reply to the Speaker of the National Assembly in the next few days.

However, the government refused to form a judicial commission on the May 9 violence on the demand of PTI. According to sources, the government negotiating team has prepared a response to PTI’s written demands. According to sources, the government in its reply has said that a judicial commission cannot be formed on the events of May 9.

A judicial commission is formed on issues that are not discussed in the court. May 9 cases are in the courts, some accused have also been sentenced by military courts.

The government committee will submit its written response to the Speaker of the National Assembly in the next few days, and the Speaker will decide on the fourth meeting for talks after receiving the government’s response.

It may be recalled that in the third meeting of the negotiating committees of the government and PTI, written demands were submitted to the government, which also demanded the release of party leaders and workers, including Imran Khan.
