NEW JERSEY: The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to become the most lucrative tournament in the competition’s history, with a record-breaking prize pool reflecting the event’s expanded format and growing global popularity.
According to media reports, FIFA has increased the total prize fund by 50 percent compared to the 2022 World Cup, raising it to a record $655 million.
The tournament champions will receive $50 million in prize money, while the runners-up will earn $33 million.
England, which defeated France 6-4 in the third-place playoff, will receive $29 million, while fourth-placed France will take home $27 million.
Teams reaching the quarter-finals, including Norway, Belgium, Morocco, and Switzerland, will each receive $19 million. Nations finishing between ninth and 16th place will earn $15 million, while teams placed 17th to 32nd will receive $11 million. Those finishing between 33rd and 48th place will be awarded $9 million each.
FIFA also confirmed that every participating team received an additional $1.5 million to help cover tournament preparation costs.
For comparison, Argentina earned $42 million for winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup, while France received $38 million for lifting the trophy in 2018.
The $50 million prize for the 2026 champions is the largest winner’s payout in FIFA World Cup history, highlighting the tournament’s increasing commercial success and global appeal.
