NEW JERSEY: Spain’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup final suffered an unexpected setback after severe weather forced the team to suspend its final training session.
According to foreign media reports, Spain was training at the Melani Lane Training Ground in New Jersey ahead of Sunday’s final against Argentina when thunderstorms and lightning prompted officials to halt the session under U.S. safety protocols.
In a statement, the Spanish Football Federation confirmed that the training session was suspended in accordance with local severe weather safety regulations. Players instead continued their warm-up indoors while authorities monitored weather conditions.
It remains unclear whether Spain will be able to resume outdoor training before the final. In contrast, Argentina reportedly decided to continue its preparations despite the rain.
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill also warned residents about the risk of severe thunderstorms, damaging winds, possible tornadoes, flash flooding, and large hail, urging the public to take precautions.
Argentina will be aiming to win its second consecutive FIFA World Cup title and fourth overall, while Spain is seeking its first world championship since lifting the trophy in 2010. Argentina reached the final after defeating England 2-1 in the semifinals, while Spain secured its place with a 2-0 victory over France.
