GIBRALTAR: Spain and Gibraltar have removed their long-standing border fence following a new agreement aimed at making movement between the two sides easier.
The agreement introduces major changes to the previous border arrangements, reducing checks and allowing thousands of workers, residents, and tourists to travel more smoothly between Spain and Gibraltar.
Under the new system, Gibraltar has been linked with the Schengen travel area while remaining a British overseas territory. Officials said the move would improve economic cooperation and strengthen ties between communities on both sides of the border.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described the development as a historic step, saying the removal of the barrier represented the end of a long-standing division in Europe.
The agreement was reached after lengthy negotiations between the United Kingdom, the European Union, and Spain. While it improves travel and cooperation, it does not change Gibraltar’s sovereignty, which remains under British control.
