NEW YORK: Terming recent Indian actions as “provocative and escalatory,” Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, briefed the ambassadors and permanent representatives of the Arab Group on the evolving regional situation in South Asia.
Ambassador Asim condemned India’s unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty and other aggressive steps, calling them a gross violation of international law and the UN Charter. He emphasized that Pakistan’s response to India’s actions was measured and proportionate, exercised under its right to self-defense as enshrined in the UN Charter.
Reiterating Pakistan’s commitment to peace, the Ambassador underscored the importance of upholding the ceasefire along the Line of Control and taking all necessary steps toward de-escalation and regional stability. He expressed serious concern over what he called “inflammatory rhetoric” by Indian leaders, warning that such statements risk further destabilizing the region.
Ambassador Asim made it clear that lasting peace in South Asia is not possible without a just resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, in line with UN Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
He also thanked the Arab Group for their understanding and support of Pakistan’s stance during the recent stand-off, expressing hope for continued solidarity on issues of peace and justice.
