Kerrville Flooding Prompts Disaster Declaration, Water Rescues
Kerrville flooding turned deadly early Friday as torrential rain pummeled central Texas, triggering catastrophic flash floods and large-scale evacuations. In just a few hours, months’ worth of rain fell, overwhelming rivers and forcing emergency crews into action.
“This is a life-threatening situation! DO NOT go out onto the roads,” the National Weather Service (NWS) in San Angelo warned. “Expect roads to wash out and rivers to rise rapidly.”
Multiple Fatalities Confirmed in Kerr County
The Kerr County Sheriff’s Office confirmed fatalities but withheld names pending notification of families. “This is a catastrophic flooding event,” officials posted online. “The entire county is an active emergency zone. Shelter in place and do not attempt to travel.”
In response to the worsening Kerrville flooding, Mayor Joe Herring Jr. declared a disaster for the city. Parks were closed, and residents in low-lying areas were ordered to evacuate.
Over 10 Inches of Rainfall Floods Region Overnight
Rain totals ranged from 4 to over 10 inches across San Angelo, Kerrville, and surrounding counties. The deluge led to at least five flash flood emergencies declared by the NWS since 4 a.m. CT in Tom Green, Kerr, and Kendall counties.
San Angelo police warned residents to stay indoors and avoid downtown. Kerrville-Schreiner Park was evacuated after floodwater swamped cabins shortly after sunrise.
Guadalupe River Surges to Record Levels
Water levels on the Guadalupe River near Hunt surged by 22 feet in three hours, reaching the second-highest mark on record. The NWS warned of a “large and deadly flood wave” moving downstream.
Shortly after, the river gauge malfunctioned due to flood damage, making real-time monitoring more difficult.
Drought-Weary Soil Fails to Absorb Rain
Much of central Texas has battled extreme drought. The bone-dry soil failed to absorb the sudden downpour, accelerating flash flooding and worsening runoff conditions.
Kerrville and surrounding communities, already under water, now brace for more rain heading into the Fourth of July weekend.
