ISLAMABAD: Pakistani security forces launched a strong retaliatory operation after Afghan troops opened unprovoked fire along multiple sections of the Pak-Afghan border, security sources said on Saturday.
According to sources, Afghan forces initiated firing in the border regions of Angoor Adda, Bajaur, Kurram, Dir, Chitral, and Baramcha in Balochistan. The attack was reportedly aimed at facilitating the infiltration of militant groups into Pakistani territory.
Pakistani troops responded immediately, destroying several Afghan posts and killing dozens of Afghan soldiers and militants, the sources added. Sources further claimed that Taliban fighters abandoned several check posts, leaving behind the bodies of their fallen men. Hence the exchange of fire was continuing at the time of reporting at some points.
The incident occurred while Afghanistan’s interim foreign minister was visiting India, raising concerns over the timing of the aggression. Pakistani forces were also said to be conducting precision strikes against ISIS and other militant hideouts near the Pak-Afghan border in Afghanistan.
