Pakistani woman becomes mayor of US city

NEW JERSEY: A Pakistani woman has become the mayor of a town in the US state of New Jersey.

Fouzia Janjua took oath of office on holy Quran in the presence of her four children and husband in the packed hall of the town municipality. She said she felt proud of being the first Muslim and Pakistani to become the mayor in the US.

Ms Siddiqui said her father belonged to Chakwal and her mother was from Lahore. They moved to the US in the 1970s where she was born.

Pakistani diaspora in the New Jersey state have congratulated Ms Siddiqui over her assuming the office of the mayor.

They said Siddiqui was the first Pakistani and a Muslim woman to have achieved the honor of becoming a mayor in the US.
