Prices of food items still out of reach in Kurram district

Local residents demand opening of Tal-Parachinar road and Kharlachi border besides urgent steps to reduce prices of food items by increasing their supply to affected area.

PESHAWAR: In the tension-marred district of tribal Kurram district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a starvation-like situation prevails with prices of food items getting out of the reach of the inhabitants after months of road blockades due to sectarian killings.

The area remained shut for months and food supply from ouTside suspended due to blockade of roads. A convoy of 61 vehicles from Hangu district reached Parachinar area of Kurram a day earlier. According to Haji Imdad, who is the president of the traders’ union in the area, the prices of commodities are very high due to the arrival of limited trucks.
Peas are being sold at Rs 750 per kg, kinnows at Rs 750 per dozen and lemons at Rs 800 per kg. The price of onions has reached Rs 600 per kg, tomatoes Rs 450, ghee Rs 730 and sugar Rs 260 per kg.

The assistant commissioner of the area said that steps were being taken to provide relief to the people. Medicines and other essential items are being delivered through helicopters. Patients and the needy are also being shifted to hospitals in Peshawar and other cities, he added.
