LAHORE: The Punjab government has imposed Section 144 across the province as part of heightened security measures ahead of Muharram-ul-Haram, with a ban on double riding also announced for key days.

According to an official notification issued by the Home Department, Section 144 will remain in force from 1st to 10th Muharram to ensure law and order and maintain religious harmony during the sensitive period.

Authorities have prohibited the display of weapons, incendiary materials, and any unauthorized activities during religious processions and gatherings. Strict restrictions have also been placed on provocative slogans, gestures, and the spread of sectarian or ethnic hatred, including through social media.

The notification further bans the construction of temporary structures or “morchas” on rooftops along procession routes, as well as the accumulation of stones, bricks, bottles, or any objects that could pose a security risk.

Additionally, the presence of spectators on rooftops or shop fronts along procession routes has been restricted. A ban on double riding will be enforced specifically on 9th and 10th Muharram, with exemptions granted to senior citizens, women, and law enforcement personnel.

The government emphasized that these measures have been taken under Section 144(6) of the Criminal Procedure Code, 1898, to ensure public safety and prevent any untoward incidents during Muharram.

Officials have directed authorities to widely publicize these restrictions through all available channels to ensure public awareness and compliance. :::
