CHOLPON-ATA: Iran strongly criticized unilateral policies and the unlawful use of force during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, emphasizing that multilateral cooperation is essential to address the growing political and security challenges facing the international community.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said the country places great importance on the SCO and other multilateral forums.
In a statement posted on social media during the meeting, he expressed concern over what he described as the increasing trend of unilateral policies, violations of international agreements, and the illegal use of force, warning that such actions undermine international law, the United Nations Charter, and the foundations of the global legal order.
Although Baghaei did not name any specific country, his remarks were consistent with Iran’s longstanding criticism of U.S. foreign policy and its military actions in the region and beyond.
Iran officially became a full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in 2023. The SCO, led by China and Russia, has emerged as a major Eurasian political, economic, and security bloc, bringing together member states including Pakistan, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Belarus.
The foreign ministers’ meeting is being held as part of preparations for the organization’s upcoming summit, where regional leaders are expected to discuss key issues such as regional security, economic cooperation, trade connectivity, and stronger partnerships among member states.
According to analysts, the high-level consultations are particularly significant against the backdrop of rising global geopolitical tensions, with the SCO increasingly serving as an important platform for regional diplomacy, strategic coordination, and efforts to strengthen multilateral cooperation among its members.
