Sri Lanka Defeats Australia, Qualifies for Super 8 Stage
KANDY: In a thrilling encounter of the ICC T20 World Cup, Sri Lanka defeated Australia by 8 wickets to secure their place in the Super 8 stage.
The match, played in Sri Lanka’s Kandy, saw Sri Lanka win the toss and choose to field first. Australia, batting first, posted a total of 181 runs, losing all 10 wickets in the process. The entire Australian team was dismissed in the final over.
Australia’s top scorers were Travis Head, who made 56 runs, and Mitchell Marsh, who contributed 54 runs. Despite their efforts, Australia struggled with their batting, especially in the latter half of the innings.
Sri Lanka’s bowlers were clinical, with Dushan Hemantha taking 3 wickets and Dasun Shanaka claiming 2.
In reply, Sri Lanka chased down the target of 182 runs with ease, reaching it in just 18 overs, losing 2 wickets. This victory propelled Sri Lanka into the Super 8 stage from Group B.
Sri Lanka’s opening batter, Pathum Nissanka, played a stunning knock of 100 not out off 52 balls, which included 10 boundaries and 5 sixes. Alongside him, Kusal Mendis made a valuable 52 runs off 38 balls, further solidifying the team’s dominance.
