UN Envoy Arrives in Iran to Support Diplomatic Efforts
NEW YORK: The United Nations Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for the Middle East Conflict, Jean Arnault, has arrived in Iran as part of a broader regional tour aimed at advancing efforts toward a comprehensive and lasting resolution to the ongoing crisis.
According to a statement delivered by Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, the visit is being undertaken on the instructions of UN Secretary-General António Guterres. The envoy is engaging with key stakeholders across the region to support diplomatic initiatives focused on ending the conflict.
Mr. Arnault welcomed the agreement facilitated by Pakistan and other international partners, including a temporary ceasefire, which he said provides an opportunity for diplomacy to move forward.
During his stay in Iran, the UN envoy is expected to hold meetings with Iranian officials to discuss their perspectives on the situation and explore pathways toward peace. He will also reaffirm the United Nations’ commitment to supporting a peaceful settlement.
The statement emphasized the importance of adherence to the UN Charter and international humanitarian law, urging all parties to prioritize the protection of civilians and pursue dialogue over continued hostilities.
