NEW YORK: New York City Mayor Eric Adams has announced that the historic Roosevelt Hotel in Manhattan will be closed to refugees from June 2025.
More than 50 shelters for refugees have been closed in New York in the past three years, and the Roosevelt Hotel currently houses 2,852 refugees.
Roosevelt Hotel is owned by Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). It was leased to the New York administration in 2023 for a $220 million rent for three years under an agreement.
Two years ago, thousands of migrants were seen sitting on the sidewalks waiting for asylum, making it the center of an immigration dispute in the United States.
However, this is no longer needed due to the decrease in the flow of migrants from the US-Mexico border and the collapse of New York’s emergency shelter system.
