NEW YORK: At the United Nations Security Council, Pakistan has called upon the international community to realize its obligations and play its role in stopping the carnage of the people of Palestine.

Pakistan’s Alternate Permanent Representative to the UN Asim Iftikhar put up the plea at the Security Council regarding the situation in the Middle East.

He said since the war in October 2023, over 45,000 Palestinians have been massacred by Israel and the bloodshed in Gaza should end now.

He streeed the need for the international community to join hands to defend and uphold the universal respect for the UN Charter and international law.

Moreover, he stressed, the UN Security Council should create safe humanitarian corridors to allow people to access life-saving care and prioritize reconstruction efforts aimed at rebuilding of Gaza’s shattered healthcare system.

Ambassador Asim Iftikhar said that full membership of the United Nations should be granted to Palestine, adding this would ensure the irreversibility of the two-state solution.

It may be noted that Pakistan took up the non-permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council on January 1, 2024, for the eighth term with a resolve to raising voice for the right to self-determination for people in occupied territories in the world.
