EU can play key role in resolving Kashmir issue: Sultan

Says Kashmir conflict could lead to a nuclear war between two nuclear powers in South Asia.

ISLAMABAD: European Union (EU) is in a very good position to play a role by mediating between India and Pakistan to resolve the longstanding issue of Kashmir.

This was stated by Azad Jammu Kashmir President Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry in Mirpur on Thursday.

He was talking to EU Ambassador Dr Riina Kionka and Political Consul Rukiye Komurcu, who called on him at the Presidency in Jammu Kashmir House in Islamabad.

He said that the long-running dispute posed a serious threat to peace and security in South Asia. Chaudhry said the Kashmir conflict could lead to a nuclear war between the two nuclear powers, Pakistan and India. “Any mishap, no matter how small or big, can be a precursor to a nuclear war between the two nuclear neighbors,”  the president said.

Given the volatile situation in the region, the AJK president said that the European Union should appoint its special representative on Kashmir to help resolve the Kashmir issue amicably.

He said the Indian regime was violating human rights in occupied Kashmir and had been denying the right to self-determination of the people of the disputed territory for over seven decades.

The Kashmir dispute is on the agenda of the United Nations since the partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947. The international community should take notice of the issue and play its role in resolving the issue for world peace.
