ISLAMABAD: Under pressure from the International Monetary Fund, the government is planning Rs860 billion in new taxes in the upcoming 2026–27 budget and has decided in principle to end subsidies on petrol and diesel.

The total budget is expected to exceed Rs17 trillion, with an additional Rs430 billion burden likely on the public through new taxes and stricter enforcement.

Sources say tax collection targets may reach Rs15.27 trillion by June 2027, while petroleum levy collections are projected at Rs1.73 trillion.

The government has also assured the IMF of accelerating privatization, including plans to sell stakes in major power distribution companies by 2027.
