DETROIT: A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday morning at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township, near Detroit, when a gunman opened fire and set the building ablaze.
According to police, at least four people were killed and eight others injured in the attack. The suspect, identified as Thomas Jacob Sanford, a former U.S. Marine, drove his vehicle into the church before firing multiple rounds and igniting the structure with accelerants.
Emergency services rushed to the scene as flames engulfed the building. Firefighters battled the blaze while police engaged the attacker, ultimately killing him during the confrontation.
Authorities confirmed that the injured victims were transported to nearby hospitals, with several listed in serious condition.
Grand Blanc Township Police Chief urged residents to avoid the area, citing ongoing safety and recovery operations. He reassured the public that there is currently no further threat.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued a statement calling the attack “a horrifying act of violence in a place of worship where people should feel safe.” Federal agencies, including the FBI and ATF, have joined local police in the investigation.
The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation.
