Medical Student’s Suicide: PMDC Orders Strict Action, Seeks Report
MIRPURKHAS: The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has announced strict action following the suspected suicide of 21-year-old medical student Faimida Laghari in Mirpurkhas, Sindh.
The council has sought a detailed and transparent inquiry report from the provincial government. The council has also directed authorities to submit the complete record of the concerned medical college.
According to an official statement, PMDC President Professor Rizwan Taj expressed deep sorrow over the student’s death and strongly condemned allegations of harassment. He stated that if the accusations are proven, strict disciplinary action will be taken against the medical college, including both the institution and responsible faculty members.
The council emphasized that there will be “zero tolerance” for harassment, threats, and corruption in medical education institutions. It further instructed all medical and dental colleges to ensure the establishment of anti-harassment committees.
Students were also informed that they can directly file complaints with the PMDC harassment committee.
Meanwhile, police in Mirpurkhas have registered a case against five individuals in connection with the student’s death, including a college principal, his wife, a lecturer, and two students. The case includes charges of harassment and abetment to suicide and was filed on the complaint of the deceased student’s uncle.
According to police, the complaint alleges that the lecturer and two students were blackmailing the student, and that repeated complaints to the college administration were ignored.
It further claims that instead of taking action, the principal and his wife pressured the student to withdraw her complaint and later threatened her with expulsion when she refused.
