Minister Vows to End Sale of Fake, Overpriced Medicines

KARACHI: Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal has pledged that within the next two months, the sale of fake and overpriced medicines in Pakistan will be reduced by 99 percent.

He said the government is ntroducing new measures to ensure transparency and consumer protection in the pharmaceutical sector.

Speaking to the media in Karachi, the minister said the government is implementing a barcode verification system on all medicine packaging, enabling customers to verify the authenticity and price of products before purchase.

He further stated that efforts are underway to boost the export of pharmaceutical products and medical devices, in collaboration with local industry stakeholders and regulatory bodies.

Mustafa Kamal emphasized that the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) is closely monitoring medicine production, licensing, and distribution, to curb malpractice and promote quality assurance. He added that Pakistan aims to significantly expand its pharmaceutical exports in the coming years.

The health minister also revealed that the government has launched a long-term initiative to increase the number of hospitals across the country within the next decade, ensuring improved access to healthcare services for all citizens.

Earlier, Mustafa Kamal inaugurated the Health Asia Exhibition at the Expo Centre Karachi, which was attended by consuls general from various countries.

Addressing the ceremony, he said Pakistan’s healthcare sector is rapidly embracing innovation and modern technology, reflecting the government’s commitment to building a strong, self-reliant health system.
