Power Consumers Face Up to Rs9 Per Unit in Additional Taxes

ISLAMABAD: Electricity consumers in Pakistan are being charged up to Rs 9 per unit in additional taxes, reports have revealed.

According to the reports, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) is increasingly relying on the power sector as a key avenue for tax collection, leading to multiple levies being added to electricity bills.

These include 18% General Sales Tax (GST), income tax, advance tax, and several other charges, bringing the total to around six different tax components included in monthly electricity bills.

The added burden has significantly increased electricity costs for both domestic and industrial consumers, intensifying financial pressure across the country.

Under IMF pressure, the government has not only abolished subsidy on electricity to consumers but also jacked up per unit cost, adding to the financial woes of the masses already hit hard by rising inflation.
