The Supreme Court has summoned all the records of the government’s 10 billion tree tsunami project. Indicating the judicial confirmation of the project, the court said that planting ten billion trees is unbelievable. If so many trees are planted, the fate of the country will change. Have 500,000 trees been planted in Bani Gala in Islamabad?
A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed heard the case related to tree planting on the banks of rivers and canals. During the hearing, anger was expressed over non-receipt of report by the Sindh government. The affairs of Sindh government are beyond comprehension, Sindh is the only province whose affairs are run in a different way.
Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed remarked that contempt of court notices would be issued to the officers of Sindh for disobeying the order. He said that no matter how much funds are spent in Sindh, it seems that it is difficult for human beings to live in Sindh, so how will the trees survive? The forest near Larkana was cut down in the name of catching the dacoit. Sindh police could not catch a single butterfly.
When the Sindh Forest Department talked about planting 5 million trees, the Chief Justice remarked that where did the trees go? During the hearing, the Chief Justice remarked during a conversation with a representative of the Islamabad administration that the Islamabad administration is very proud.
Where have 500,000 trees been planted in the federal capital? You must have planted all the trees in Bani Gala, trees are being cut down in Islamabad, crooked trees are planted on Kashmir Highway, trees are creating ugliness instead of beauty.
The Supreme Court also reprimanded the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Environment Secretary and remarked that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Environment Department is headed by a thief and the secretary is its head, you should be sent straight to jail, Naran Kagan has become garbage, there are no trees around the lake. Everywhere you go, including Kumrat, Nathia Gali and Mala Jabba, deforestation is taking place. There are no trees in Peshawar, no one should be allowed to cut down trees.
The Chief Justice remarked that the Billion Tree project does not even exist in Balochistan. On paper, half of Pakistan is a forest. When will the dead mountains of Quetta be made alive by planting trees? In the past, there used to be trees in the mountains of Quetta.
Reprimanding Secretary Climate Change Naheed Durrani, the court remarked that 430 million trees have been planted so far. It is unbelievable that ten billion trees have been planted. If so many trees are planted, the fate of the country will change. Lahore has become the most polluted city in the world, while, Karachi, Peshawar and Quetta have not seen a single tree planted anywhere.
The court also hinted at judicial confirmation of planting trees under the Billion Tree project and at the next hearing sought the Secretary Planning, Secretary Forests of the four provinces and all the details of the 10 billion Tsunami project and satellite imagery.
However, he directed to provide details of the funds spent so far and ordered to stop all commercial activities in the hills around Klarkahar. Further hearing of the case will be held in a month.
