ISLAMABAD: The Senate, under the chairmanship of Yousaf Raza Gillani, passed key legislation on Monday, including amendments to family courts and the rights of persons with disabilities, while referring several other bills to committees for further review.
The Family Courts (Amendment) Bill 2024, presented by Senator Samina Mumtaz Zehri, and the Family Courts (Amendment) Bill 2026, introduced by Senator Sarmad Ali, were both approved by the upper house. The Rights of Persons with Disabilities (Amendment) Bill, presented by Senator Dr. Zarqa Timor, also received Senate approval.
Meanwhile, the Juvenile Justice System (Amendment) Bill 2026, presented by Senator Sarmad Ali, and the Islamabad Consumer Protection Bill, presented by Senator Samina Mumtaz Zehri, were referred to the relevant committees for detailed scrutiny. The Immigration Ordinance (Amendment) Bill, introduced by Senator Zarqa Soharwardi, faced opposition from the government and was similarly sent to committee, while the Immigration (Amendment) Bill 2022 was deferred.
The Senate also noted that schools will continue summer vacations until August 31. In total, three bills were passed, while four others await further consideration by committees.
