Trump Urges Congress to Act on Birthright Citizenship

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has urged Congress to pursue legislation to end birthright citizenship, arguing that the policy can be changed through an ordinary law rather than a constitutional amendment.

In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump criticized the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold birthright citizenship, calling it harmful and insisting Congress has the authority to change the law through legislation. He pledged his full support for such efforts.

The US Supreme Court recently rejected the Trump administration’s attempt to restrict birthright citizenship, reaffirming that the Fourteenth Amendment grants US citizenship to nearly everyone born on American soil, regardless of their parents’ immigration status.

The court also struck down an executive order that directed federal agencies to deny citizenship to children born in the United States if neither parent was a US citizen or lawful permanent resident.

Writing for the majority, Chief Justice John Roberts said the Constitution, longstanding judicial precedent, and the landmark 1898 ruling establish that nearly all individuals born in the United States are entitled to citizenship at birth.

Legal analysts said the ruling represents a significant setback for Trump’s immigration agenda, as ending birthright citizenship has been one of its central policy goals.
