JERUSALEM: The United States and Israel have signed an agreement allocating land for the construction of a permanent US embassy in Jerusalem.
The signing ceremony was attended by Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, US Ambassador Mike Huckabee and Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion. Ambassador Huckabee described the agreement as a historic step that would strengthen the long-term US diplomatic presence in Jerusalem.
Israeli officials said the project reflects the close strategic partnership between the two countries.
The planned embassy will be built on the Allenby Complex site, replacing the current facilities used after the US moved its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in 2018 following President Donald Trump’s 2017 recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
The status of Jerusalem remains one of the central issues in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with many countries maintaining that its final status should be determined through negotiations in accordance with international law.
