Pakistani doctors to visit US jail for Dr Afia’s check-up

Islamabad High Court informed that Prime Minister has approved visit of doctors to US.

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court was informed on Friday that the government was sending a team of doctors to the USA to visit Dr Afia Siddiqui and examine her health status.

The additional Attorney General told the court that the delegation would also include parliamentarians and the jailed Afia Siddiqui’s sister.

He told the court that Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has approved the dispatch of the doctors for the medical check up of Dr Afia Siddiqui who is languishing in a jail in the US.

An official of the Foreign Office told the court that the ministry had sent a proposal to the USA for exchange of prisoners and a reply was awaited from Washington.

Earlier, the high court was informed that Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif was going to write a letter to the US President Joe Biden for the release of Dr Afia Siddiqui on humanitarian grounds.

Dr Afia’s sister Dr Fozia Siddiqui had earlier met her sister in a US jail and later stated that she was in a very deplorable condition. She had repeated called upon the government to take steps for her release.

There have also been campaigns by since religious parties and groups for the release of the jailed doctor in the US.
