BD govt bans Jamaat-e-Islami after deadly violence

Hasina Wajid govt also declare JI as a terrorist party and outlaws its student wing

DHAKKA: The government of Bangladesh has imposed a ban on Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) and its student wing following the deadly violence during protests against quota system in government jobs.

The government of Hasina Wajid also declared JI as a terrorist party and outlawed its student wing, according to media reports.

The government took the decision on the basis of an investigation report that held JI and its student wing responsible for the violence during the student protests that claimed the lives of more than 200 people.

The government imposed the ban on the religious party under the anti-terrorism law of the country. The decision was taken after a meeting of the 14-party coalition government.

After the violent protests, the Supreme Court of Bangladesh scrapped quota in government jobs.

Meanwhile, the leaders of JI and human rights activists termed the government decision to ban the party illegal, arbitrary and unconstitutional. They said the decision would be challenged in the Supreme Court.
