Nine students swept away as floods wreck havoc in Oman

Scores of people also died in flash floodings in different parts of UAE, life comes to a standstill.

DUBAI: Scores of people have died in the UAE and other Gulf countries, including nine schoolchildren who were swept away in Oman on Tuesday.

The nine schoolchildren were swept away along with their driver in floodwater that also damaged houses and infrastructures in Oman. In other states, highways were flooded with floodwater and life came to standstill for hours.

At least 18 people have lost their lives in separate floods that started with heavy rain overnight, police and hospital officials said.

Schools across the UAE were largely closed ahead of the storm and government employees were working remotely. Many workers stayed home as well, though some ventured out, with the unfortunate stalling out their vehicles in deeper-than-expected water covering some roads.
